John was raised the younger of two sons in the family. His father, who was a lawyer, died when he was 17. Arnold studied mathematics and economics at the Vanderbilt University, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Upon finishing college, John began working at Enron as an oil analyst, but soon became an assistant trader due to his abilities. A year later, he moved to the Natural Gas Desk and started trading natural gas derivatives. Arnold is credited with making around $700 million dollars for the company in 2001, after which he was given an $8 million bonus. However, upon Enron’s bankruptcy in 2002, John founded his own hedge fund, a company called Centaurus, using his previous year’s bonus as an investment. His company churned out enormous returns for several years and accumulated a billion-dollar fortune in the process. John made returns of 317% net of fees and the company soon closed to new inventors.

However, Arnold truly rose to fame in 2007 when he became the nation’s youngest billionaire. In August the following year, Centaurus acquired around 10% of National Coal Corporation’s shares.

When it comes to his private life, Arnold is married to Laura Elena Arnold who is the co-chair of the Laura and John Arnold Foundation. She is a former attorney and an oil company executive, who studied at Harvard College, Yale Law School and University of Cambridge. The couple has three children and resides in New York.

However, despite his fortune, John has a humble background and has been using his impressive wealth for philanthropic causes. In 2008, Arnold and his wife founded the Laura and John Arnold Foundation which they have been funding ever since. The foundation focuses on issues such as reforming K-12 education, improving the criminal justice system, public pension reform and the improvement of reproducibility in science. Since his retirement in 2012, John has been working as an Adjunct Professor of Management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University. In addition to being a member of the Board of Directors of Robin Hood, Arnold is also a Trustee at Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine.
