Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Photo Throws Raphael Into Traffic

Over the weekend some of the people fortunate enough to attend CinemaCon in Las Vegas were privy to the first trailer for the Michael Bay-produced, Jonathan Liebesman-directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. We were not among these people. But you can read the description from our lovely older sibling Cinema Blend if you’re so inclined. Don’t worry, the rest of us will be able to see the trailer when it gets released tomorrow, but until then a couple of photos have leaked onto ye olde Internet, and that should tide you over until we see actual footage.
The first of these images, that look suspiciously like they’re probably screencaps from the trailer, shows one of the actual Turtles. Our first look that isn’t a toy. This one also happens to be Raphael, who, at least in the original incarnation, was always the dark, moody, brooding member of the clan, and my personal favorite. Part of me still wants to learn how to fight with the sai—it’s a small part, the rest of me knows how badly I would injure myself.
This isn’t a particularly fantastic view of the hero in a half shell. The picture is blurry and cluttered and you don’t get a very good look at him, but the one thing that stands out most about the picture, however, is his sheer size. Hummer’s are pretty damn big, but Raphael appears to be as tall, if not a few inches taller than this one, which means he’s rather big. In all of the previous iterations, whether we’re talking cartoons, movies, or video games, the Turtles have always been roughly human size. But Michael Bay is involved in this movie, and as well all know, bigger certainly is better in his world. What this means we’ll have to wait and see, but it is something we’ll have to wrap our collective heads around.
Picture number two shows us Megan Fox as a no-longer-red-headed April O’Neal. She is wearing that iconic yellow jacket, however, so there’s that. The image captures her in the middle of snapping a picture of some unseen thing, or maybe she’s shooting video, I can’t tell if that’s her phone or a small video camera. Perhaps this is her catching her first glimpse of the one of the Turtles in the subway, though it could just as easily be her catching sight of one of the other oddities from the film. Even in New York City, you don’t see someone dressed like Shredder walking around every day. That would be a strange sight indeed.
Over the weekend we also learned that origin story in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is different than the one that we’re familiar with. They’re not from space, like Bay intimated at one point, so we don’t have to worry about that, but there are significant changes. They’re still a product of the mutagenic ooze, but in this version it was Shredder and April’s father that created the goo (I hope it still glows). Like with everything else, we’ll have to wait and see what impact this change has on the story.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8.
